A huge blaze that has erupted in a derelict block of flats has spread to the supermarket next door.
The fire took hold of the unbuilt flats in Howard Road, behind Sainsbury's and Banatyne's Gym, Chafford Hundred.
10 fire crews are on scene battling the blaze which is now believed to be under control but there are reports it has spread to the back of Sainsbury's.
The supermarket has been completely evacuated as a precaution.
Police have warned people to stay away from the area while emergency services deal with the incident.
Traffic is being affected as fire engines are believed to have closed the road so motorists are noticing queues on the A13 and Arterial Road in West Thurrock.
Essex Police are on scene and have said: "Police are assisting the fire service at the scene of a fire in a derelict building in Howard Road, Chafford Hundred.
"Officers were made aware shortly before 5pm today, Tuesday September 12. Sainsbury’s and Bannatyne Health Club have been evacuated while firefighters deal with the blaze.
"Road closures are in place in Burghley Road; on the A1306 between the Treacle Mine and Sainsbury’s; and the A1306 between Arena Essex and Burghley Road.
"Drivers are asked to avoid the area and are thanked for their patience.
