Andrew Sachs, who charmed the nation as the hapless waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 86 after suffering dementia for four years.

The actor died last week at Denville Hall, a private care home for retired actors in Northwood, north London. He had vascular dementia diagnosed in 2012, which had left him unable to speak and using a wheelchair.

His wife of 57 years, Melody, said that he was buried yesterday at a funeral in north London. “My heart has been broken every day for a long time,” Mrs Sachs, 86, said.

“He had dementia for four years and it wasn’t very pleasant. We didn’t really notice it at first until the memory started going.

One of the truly great comic characters.
Fawlty Towers was made in the 70's and doesn't date.
Still as funny then as it is today.
