People living like animals in the gutter , we send money because we , quite rightly, would like to help the poor and their government sends a rocket to Mars .The Indian government is as much out of touch with reality as ours is.

I thought the Indian Government had called our aid "peanuts" and said they no longer wanted it?

Giving £180m every year to Pakistan, that's what I don't get.

You certainly would get more sense from the road sweepers, they are living in the real world.

Well, it makes you think.  I saw on the news this evening that a third of the population of India live in absolute poverty (thats some number when the total population is 1.23 billion people) and healthcare and basic education is almost non-existent for this group.

India is not poor those at the bottom of the pile are the untouchables or the Sadhu its a cultural dilemma not a matter of money.
With a population of 1.23 Billion whats a few Million and what would be the result of them getting medicare and aid.Yes you have it 2.23 Billion.
The answer lies not in money but in a whole new way of thinking.

You might actually be an Indian and therefore will naturally know more about India than I do.

I just googled "poverty in India" and wiki claims that India has a "third of the world's poor" and it mentions the caste system.

I was just wondering why so much money has been spent on sending a rocket to Mars or wherever when that money could be spent on, say, raising the literacy rates of the kids that don't get an education or help with food production or something.

Cultural problems can be changed, I think it was the British who stopped suttee, the practice of burning a widow alive.

Maybe the problems include corruption and bureaucracy, India is an entrepreneurial place, maybe it just has too many people?

I am not Indian but have been there several times and communicate with a group who live there most days.
Yes too many people but they have no policy to reduce that and India is on target to pass the population of China within a few years. They have one of the most open societies to religion with more religions in one city than other whole countries. They have done nothing to alleviate the destruction from the last great earth quake and skeletons lie scattered for hundreds of miles in the mountains. The rich caste do not even consider the lowest castes to be Humans and ignore them except if they get in the way.
Going to India can be distressing until you learn its the way they are and have been for centuries. Its not up to us to try to change a civilisation that was around when our ancestors lived in mud huts and painted themselves blue. The aid we give is the oil that ensures we can trade with them and the way we pay to have diplomatic relations with the biggest trading country in the world.Cut it off and watch Primark close and thousands in the UK out of work
Here a picture of the devastation in what was a very pretty valley.

Britain's worst ever Prime Minister Cameron said his proudest achievement was increasing the foreign aid budget by 30% to £11.3 billion.... Nice to see the £200 million a year we give to India has been well spent...

Read here what the Tory's are doing with your taxes....
